The MA5 is a 500-series microphone preamp built around the feel and tone of early ’70s British Class-A console electronics. It is direct, open and full-bodied, with a transformer-balanced discrete signal path that delivers solid low-end weight, clear midrange detail and smooth, musical top end.
Designed and built in California, the MA5 uses in-house made input and output transformers, a direct-coupled single-ended Class-A amplifier, stepped gain control and an output trim for level matching or mute. The sound is rich and confident without becoming cloudy, with excellent headroom, low noise and strong common-mode rejection for professional studio work.
The front-panel 28kHz switch adds a gentle high-frequency lift, useful for restoring air and detail that can be softened by long cable runs or additional processing. It gives the MA5 a little extra openness while keeping the character natural and refined.
After 18 years in production, the MA5 has earned its place in home studios, tracking rooms and professional facilities around the world. A beautifully made, time-tested 500-series preamp with classic Class-A attitude and modern reliability.
