Introduced in 1960 as a modern evolution of Shure’s classic Unidyne family, the 545 brought a sleeker, end-addressed form factor that made the bulky Elvis-era 55 designs instantly feel like yesterday. Built from die-cast zinc and Shure’s own Armo-Dur composite, it delivered rugged reliability for PA, recording, and installed sound.
Inside is the famed R45 element: the same heart later shared by the SM57. Switchable low and high-impedance operation made the 545 a stage favorite, widely seen throughout the 60s and 70s, including on instruments at Woodstock.
Even decades on, the 545 maintains a cult following. Vintage USA-made units with original transformers are especially prized for their thicker, less “honky” tone compared to newer SM57s.
A true survivor - over 60 years on the market.
