The 1967 release of the 1176 Limiting Amplifier instantly became a classic due to its lightning-fast attack and release times, Class A output stage, and versatile range of sounds - from subtle compression to intense drive and distortion.
Universal Audio's 1176LN Classic Limiting Amplifier is a meticulously handbuilt reproduction of Bill Putnam Sr.'s original design, renowned in audio history for its role in iconic recordings by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and others.
Billed as a "true peak limiter with all-transistor circuitry and superior performance on all program material," the 1176's main attraction was its ultra-fast attack time of just 20 µS (.00002 seconds) at its fastest setting. Beyond compression, engineers discovered that the 1176 added a unique character, attitude, and vibe to the audio passing through it. Many even utilized the 1176 with compression turned off, solely for its distinct tone and "hot" quality provided by its amplifiers and transformers.
